How To Improve Your Mixes and Masters

with 1 Audio Production Strategy!

In this video I’m going to show you how one of the essential audio production techniques can help you in improving your mixes. This technique is so simple but yet so powerful, that so many pro audio producers use.

On the other hand, for some reason lots of audio producers skip it.

By the way, if we haven’t officially met - I’m Adrian Milea and I help audio producers, to start their own business in less than 90 days. My production was released by Armada Music and I was featured in Dj Mag. But enough about me, let’s get back to what you are here for and that is to improve your mixes.

Therefore, in the next couple of minutes I’m going to show one technique you should use from now on, that is - if you want to improve your mixes.

There is this common myth that audio producers like, which sounds something like this:

No matter the production, the mixing or the mastering engineer will save the song.

Which is not always the case. You see, if you want your production to sound professional - the #1 thing you should do, when producing a song - is choosing quality samples or quality virtual or real instruments. If you skip this step - no mixing or mastering engineer will save your production from sounding weak or amateur. This is why this step is so crucial!

Of course, there is also the option of layering different samples that can help you to some extent, but we’re going to talk about that, maybe in another tutorial. So, if you want to improve your mixes - start using quality samples.

Let me show you what I’m talking about. So, here I have a session of mine and I’m going to show you two versions of the same exact production. In the first version, I used some really simple samples, in order to make a big contrast and to demonstrate what I’m talking about.

And in the second I used some quality samples. In both versions, there is no mixing or mastering applied, just some side-chaining. I also balanced the volume of the tracks a bit. Nothing more. So, let’s listen to the first version.

Now let’s listen to the same exact production, but in which I use better samples. Again no mixing or mastering was applied. So, there you have it. In the second case, the song idea sounds more like a song you could improve with mixing and mastering.

Just to give you some context, think about audio production like a… let’s say a…food recipe. I don’t know why I have this analogy at the moment, maybe I’m hungry :) Anyway, let’s say you want to produce a song aka a dinner recipe. In order to have a great dinner you need quality products:

Your Kick could be - the meat.

The Bass could be - rice.

The Pad could be - oil.

The Lead could be a salad and so on :D

The bottom line is that - if you will use quality products, and you fill follow the framework aka the recipe - you will have a delicious meal.

If you will use quality samples, you will have a great mix and master. And to continue my food analogy - you can consider the mixing and mastering stage - as seasoning or the salt and pepper.

And if we’re talking dessert, we could definitely say that the cream on a cake, which is mostly used for the overall presentation - the cream, could be considered as the mastering stage. Now I definitely have to go to eat something :D But, I hope it makes sense what I’m talking about.

And to recap, start using quality samples in your audio production if you want to sound like your favorite artist or producer, or you just want to improve your mixes.

Remember, if you want to have quality mixes and masters - it all begins with the song foundation, then you go through different stages up to the mixing and mastering ones. It is crucial to pay attention to what samples you use in your production, therefore, use them strategically.

And by the way, you are looking at the framework I use to help Composers, Audio Producers, Mixing or Mastering engineers to improve their skills and start their own business in less than 90 days, without spending time on techniques that don’t work.
